Cactus Juice Repellant

The Story
Three years ago on the island of Roatan, in Honduras (a bug infested,
sun-scorched paradise), while laying in a hammock and discussing the needs for a
product that naturally and effectively protected one for insects, sun and dry
skin and that did not smell bad or contain harmful chemicals or pesticides, a
good friend mentioned that his father had been working with a plant extract and
formulation that was perfect for this application.
The plant extract was from the Prickly Pear Cactus and the formulation was
Cactus Juice. We requested that our friend's father send us samples so that we
could test it on the local population., people and bugs alike.
It worked!! It was extremely effective, but did not remain active on the skin
for very long. We made some calls and found a chemist/formulator to prepare a
carrier base solution made up of suitably natural components.
Three tries later, we purchased our first 1,000 bottles, labeled them, and
started to market Cactus Juice brand insect repellent. Initially, people were
skeptical after years of having to douse themselves with harsh, smelly chemicals
only to receive marginal results. So we consigned products in the major resorts
and in some smaller Mom-and-Pop shops along the beach.
Before long. we were out, and due to the logistical problems of Third World
living, had a hard time keeping up with demand. Tourists would even come to our
homes looking for the product and asking to be distributors back home.
Soon we expanded to the surrounding islands, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Belize and
the mainland of Central America. Seeing the potential, we agreed it was time to
go the next step and apply for a patent and trademark. This was a serious
decision because it would involve leaving our island home and returning to the
U.S.. Our goal was to become the manufacturer so that we could control the
quality, cost and have the ability to change rapidly with the market.
As things worked out, we did return, purchased the existing production facility,
re-formulated the product, improved packaging/labeling, and now have a full line
of cactus based products.
